History of Portishead Carnival

Est 1902

This page started in 2024 with a mission to find out how old Portishead Carnival really was, we knew it was hundreds of years old but how many ?

After extensive, a little obsessive research from admin and community contribution, we found out!

We thank every member of the community who have and continue to contribute to this page

The first article listed here is as far back as we can go, from this stating in 1904 that it was the 3rd annual carnival was held, a conclusion can be met, the very first one was held in 1902.

The 125th Anniversary will be in 2027!!

 The article reads in part

‘the show has been in abeysnon since 1914, and probably many of those present in the show held looking over the sea, again lent by Mr A. T. Wilmott, retained memories of that August day of 1914 when war clouds were hanging over us and the future was blank’

A Carnival Love Story

The Carnival Dance was held at Folk Hall in 1955 and that very night the newly crowned Carnival Queen Myra Westerman met a gentleman named John Benjamin, who had come from London to work on the power station, soon after the carnival dance he decided to stay in Portishead and they were married 2 years later in 1957.

The carnival has always been a very memorable event for the Benjamin family with their children and grandchildren taking part in celebrations for various organisations over the years and now their great grandchildren will be taking part in the 2025 Carnival parade.

Myra & John recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in September. Sadly Myra passed away December 2024 at 85 years old. She was so pleased when she heard the carnival was coming back this year and we can only hope that we do it justice for Myra and her family.
